The group arrived in London to find out their rooms were...not ready? The poor kids had to sit around the hotel lobby for most of the morning and afternoon.

But they did get to meet our tour guide, the indefatigable Roy.

Later, we marched up King's Road for our first Underground experience, and then to dinner where we ate the strangest potato salad I've ever seen. It was the first of many memorable dining occasions for Jon. Afterwards we wandered around Leicester Square, the going-out center of London.

Actually in Paris, but I'm not changing it!

My own day was little different; my tiny dump of a room (the Wansbeck Gardens, it actually turned out to be pretty cool, but no frills) was also not ready, so I hiked through London along Fleet Street down to the Thames.
London is a bustling city, crowded and noisy and powerful with the weight of all the years, but very much a working town in spite of the historic attractions.
