This map had little rooster icons for cockfighting venues.

Martinique, the island of flowers, is a french province with full status. The feeling was like a little bit of Europe in the tropics, very French town, classy exotic people, lots of Mercedes.
Built for the Paris 1889 Exhibition.

We hiked into town for croissants and coffee, the very elegant madame even went next door to the bakery for more bread.
The big party always started next week.

Balata's version of the Sacre Coeur.

Scenery was the theme this day: a taxi ride up into the hills to see the Jardin de Balata, a tropical garden.
The gardens were very well maintained and arranged, a little too crowded with school kids, but varied and beautiful.
Just follow the dangerously slippery path.

This wasn't a pristine wilderness but a manicured display of several hundred species, with a winding path laid through wildly changing thickets and plots.
This spot was definitely worth the trip, should be more pictures. The rest of the day was spent at an actually unimpressive beach with poor snorkeling.
Have to make a return trip here to see more of the island.
Barbados
The next day was a short one on Barbados, the most British of the islands since it's been British since the arrival of the Europeans. This day had good snorkeling and beach fun, but I have only the one picture.
This man's kids were having a great time crawling all over him.
