Dominica rises high out of the water, here the Roseau River gorge reaches the sea. Larger version

Dominica was the poorest island, the tourists were targets from the first step off the boat. "No thanks, no thanks, we're walking..."
We hiked up streets under construction lined with tiny shops, no tourist stuff here.
The Roseau Botanical Gardens is more like a park, though, after recent hurricanes.
Cool flora.

These trees were on all the islands, but what are they?
 |
Steaming hot group shot.
 |
The parrots were cool but fairly hidden and silent, luckily Alex was there to snap a group shot, and taxi us into the lush hills.
The drive up the steep slopes of Dominica was fascinating, we saw bananas, breadfruit, cashews, pineapples, coconuts, papayas(?) maybe, too much fruit to list.
Lush land, poor people.

After a long drive in the rain (but hey, it's a rainforest!) we reached the Emerald Pool.
Cortney & Catie enjoyed the view at the Emerald Pool.
 |
After a brief stay at the pool we drove back down the mountains, I had a break at a cafe on the bay, along with more relentless offers of items for sale. Dominica is a beautiful island, with hundreds of rivers (the claim is 365 for one per day) but it's tough on the tourist to be so relatively affluent without feeling a little guilt.
The Bransford Family, feeling no guilt.

On to the ship for the short trip to Martinique, by now the rolling sea is starting to feel normal, and pretty fun to tell the truth.
